Bose Companion 2 Series III Multimedia Speakers Overview

The full review

How the Bose Companion 2 Series III Multimedia Speakers performs, point by point

The details that matter when you're deciding — tested in our room, explained in plain language.

01

Sound Quality

I went into the Bose Companion 2 Series III expecting the usual Bose thing: easy listening first, audiophile drama never. That’s basically what you get. The sound is smooth, polite, and very non-fatiguing, which makes these speakers easy to live with for long work sessions or background listening.

What stands out most is how balanced they feel for casual desktop use. Voices come through clearly, guitars have decent presence, and they don’t get harsh when you push them a little. They’re not the kind of speakers that dig deep or throw a huge soundstage, but they do a solid job of making everyday music sound clean and organized.

Where I’d temper expectations is bass and scale. There’s enough low-end to keep things from sounding thin, but if you want that chesty thump or room-filling weight, these won’t fake it very convincingly. They’re best when you accept them for what they are: compact speakers that prioritize clarity and comfort over excitement.

02

Desktop Fit and Everyday Use

These make the most sense on a desk, not as a “let’s turn the room into a concert” solution. I liked them most for sitting close and listening at normal volumes while working, browsing, or spinning background music. In that setting, they’re easy to forget about in the best way.

The footprint is friendly, and the system doesn’t ask much from you once it’s set up. I also appreciate that they don’t feel fussy or over-designed, which matters when you just want something that works every time you sit down.

For movies, podcasts, and general computer audio, they’re perfectly sensible. If your use case is mostly nearfield listening and you care more about consistency than wow-factor, they fit that role well.

03

Build and Design

The design is classic Bose: simple, tidy, and meant to disappear into the room. I don’t find them flashy, but I do find them easy to place and easy to live with. They look like they belong next to a monitor without turning your desk into a gadget showcase.

Build quality feels straightforward and functional rather than luxurious. Nothing about them screams “premium jewelry for your desk,” but they don’t feel flimsy either. They’re the kind of speakers you buy because you want them to quietly do their job for a long time.

I also like that the controls are kept uncomplicated. There’s no learning curve, no weird app nonsense, and no unnecessary visual clutter. That simplicity is a real advantage if you just want a clean desktop setup.

04

Setup and Connectivity

Setup is about as painless as it gets, which is exactly what I want from a basic multimedia speaker system. Plug them in, connect your source, and you’re basically done. There’s no ritual, no menu diving, and no drama.

The connectivity is intentionally simple, and that’s both the point and the limitation. If your setup is a laptop, desktop, or a straightforward audio source, you’ll probably be fine. If you’re hoping for a more flexible modern hub with lots of input options, this isn’t that kind of product.

For most people using these at a computer, the simplicity is actually a plus. I’d rather have a stable, no-nonsense connection than a feature list full of stuff I’ll never use.

05

Who They’re For

I’d put the Bose Companion 2 Series III in the “safe, sensible, easy-to-like” category. They’re a good fit for someone who wants better-than-monitor audio without getting into a rabbit hole of amps, DACs, or speaker placement obsession. They’re especially appealing if you value comfort and convenience over chasing every last detail.

They’re also a decent choice if you listen for long stretches and don’t want bright or aggressive sound wearing you out. I think that’s where they make the most sense: office use, casual music listening, podcasts, YouTube, and everyday computer audio.

If you’re after deep bass, big dynamics, or a more immersive hi-fi presentation, I’d look elsewhere. But if you want a compact desktop speaker that’s easy to set up and easy to live with, these do the job without making a fuss.
