Fluance RT81 Turntable Review

The Fluance RT81 does a solid job when it comes to sound quality, especially for a beginner turntable. With the pre-mounted moving magnet cartridge, I found that it delivered a warm, engaging sound that really brought my records to life. It’s not going to compete with high-end rigs, but for someone just getting into vinyl, it’s more than satisfying.

I noticed that the elliptical stylus does a good job of picking up detail without sounding harsh, which is a win for those late-night listening sessions. However, if you’re coming from a digital background, don’t expect a miracle; this turntable won’t magically transform mediocre pressings into audiophile gold. It’s a solid entry point, but the sound won’t rescue a poorly set up system.

The wood plinth on the RT81 gives it a nice aesthetic that feels like a real component, not just another plastic appliance. I appreciate the heft of the aluminum platter, which adds a touch of class and stability during playback. You do have to adjust the counterweight and anti-skate, but it’s not rocket science. I’d say it requires about ten careful minutes, which is a small investment for a rewarding experience.

The built-in phono preamp is a major highlight for the RT81, allowing you to connect directly to powered speakers or a receiver without a dedicated phono input. This feature really simplifies the setup, especially for those of us living in smaller spaces with limited gear. One RCA connection, and you’re off to the races—no extra boxes or cables needed.

In my day-to-day experience, the RT81 has been a reliable performer. It’s easy to operate, and I appreciate the manual control—it makes me feel more engaged with my music. However, I’ve seen some friends who bought it and paired it with underwhelming speakers in cramped spaces, expecting a magical transformation, and that’s where it falls short. If you already know you’re going to want better speakers or an external phono preamp soon, you might find yourself outgrowing this model fairly quickly.
