Focal SUB 10 10" Subwoofer Overview

The full review

How the Focal SUB 10 10" Subwoofer performs, point by point

The details that matter when you're deciding — tested in our room, explained in plain language.

01

Sound quality and low-end character

What stood out to me most about the Focal SUB 10 is that it doesn’t try to be a “look how much bass I can make” kind of subwoofer. It’s more controlled than flashy, and that matters a lot in a real listening room where sloppy bass can wreck the whole presentation.

With music, I found it works best when I use it to fill in the bottom end rather than call attention to itself. Kick drums have more weight, bass lines feel fuller, and the whole system sounds more grounded without turning muddy or bloated.

It’s the kind of sub that makes a setup sound finished. If you like your low end tight, articulate, and integrated instead of overcooked, this is very much in that lane.

02

Integration with a stereo or home theater setup

The SUB 10 is at its best when it disappears into the system. Once I got it dialed in, I stopped thinking about “the subwoofer” and just heard a bigger, more convincing soundstage with better foundation underneath it.

That’s the real win here: it can add body without making everything sound like it’s coming from a separate box in the corner. For vinyl especially, that matters, because a sub that’s too obvious can make records sound detached and a little fake.

I’d call it a strong choice for someone who wants to support bookshelf speakers or a modest two-channel setup without turning the room into a bass demo. It’s more about balance than brute force.

03

Build quality and physical design

Focal usually knows how to make gear that feels properly put together, and the SUB 10 has that same no-nonsense vibe. It looks clean, feels solid, and doesn’t scream for attention the way some subwoofers do.

I like that it has a fairly straightforward design that should slide into a living room or listening space without becoming an eyesore. It feels like something meant to live with you, not something you have to hide.

The cabinet doesn’t give off that cheap, hollow feeling some subs have when you tap around on them or move them into place. That matters more than people think, because a well-built box usually behaves like a better-behaved box.

04

Setup and dialing it in

This is not the kind of subwoofer that rewards lazy placement, but that’s not a knock. Like most good subs, it gets much better when you take the time to position it properly and match it to your speakers and room.

I found the controls easy enough to work with, and once I had the crossover and level sorted, it was pretty painless to live with. You don’t need to be an installer to get good results, but you do need to be willing to listen and tweak.

For vinyl listeners, that’s actually a plus. A sub that’s easy to overdo is a headache; a sub that asks for a little patience usually pays you back with much better bass integration.

05

Who it suits best

I’d point the SUB 10 toward someone building a serious two-channel system who wants real low-end support without turning the room into a bass shrine. It makes a lot of sense with compact speakers, especially if your main speakers sound great but don’t quite reach down far enough on their own.

It also feels like a smart fit for listeners who care more about texture and control than sheer impact. If you want bass that helps acoustic records, rock, soul, and electronic music sound more complete, this is the kind of sub I’d trust.

If your main goal is maximum room-shaking output, I’d probably look elsewhere. But if you want a subwoofer that behaves like part of the system instead of a separate special effect, the Focal SUB 10 makes a strong case for itself.
