MartinLogan Motion 40i Speaker - Gloss Black Overview

The full review

How the MartinLogan Motion 40i Speaker - Gloss Black performs, point by point

The details that matter when you're deciding — tested in our room, explained in plain language.

01

Sound Quality

The first thing I noticed with the Motion 40i was how clean and quick it sounds. The folded-motion tweeter gives vocals and cymbals a really crisp edge without turning into that brittle, splashy top end I’ve heard from plenty of “detailed” speakers.

What I like most is that it doesn’t just do sparkle for the sake of sparkle. There’s real separation in busy mixes, so I can follow a bass line, a vocal, and a guitar part at the same time without everything turning into a blob.

The low end is more controlled than huge, which I actually appreciate in a real room. It digs in enough to keep rock, jazz, and electronic music feeling grounded, but it’s not trying to fake the kind of chest-thumping bass that usually ends up sounding loose anyway.

02

Tonal Balance and Listening Fatigue

This is a speaker that rewards longer listening sessions. I never felt like I had to keep reaching for the volume because the top end was wearing me out, which is a big deal if you listen for hours at a time.

The overall balance leans lively and open, but not aggressively so. If your system already runs bright, I’d still think about the rest of the chain carefully, because the Motion 40i is honest enough to show you what’s upstream.

It does a nice job of keeping detail without sounding clinical. That matters to me more than “wow” factor, because I’d rather live with a speaker that sounds right on a Tuesday night than one that only impresses for the first five minutes.

03

Imaging and Room Presence

These speakers throw a stable, well-defined image when they’re placed properly. I got the best results with a little breathing room from the wall and a bit of toe-in, and once dialed in, the center image locked in nicely.

They’re the kind of floorstanders that can make a room feel bigger without smearing the stage. Instruments don’t just pile up between the cabinets; they occupy their own space in a way that makes live recordings and layered studio albums much more enjoyable.

I wouldn’t call them forgiving of sloppy setup, though. If you cram them into a tight corner, you’ll lose some of what makes them special, especially the openness and the clean separation they’re capable of.

04

Build and Finish

The gloss black finish looks sharp and a little dramatic, especially if you like a more modern, high-contrast setup. It has that polished, furniture-like presence that makes the speakers feel like part of the room instead of just black boxes standing there.

Physically, they feel substantial and well put together. Nothing about them gave me that hollow, cost-cutting vibe, and the overall design feels intentional rather than flashy for the sake of it.

That said, gloss black is gloss black: it shows fingerprints, dust, and every little smudge if you’re the kind of person who notices that stuff. I’d call it beautiful but not low-maintenance.

05

Who They’re For

I think the Motion 40i makes the most sense for someone who wants a serious two-channel speaker that can do detail, scale, and refinement without turning into a giant, overbearing tower. It feels especially well suited to listeners who care about vocals, acoustic instruments, and clean high-frequency detail.

If your taste runs toward sloppy, oversized bass or a super warm, laid-back presentation, this probably won’t be your endgame. It’s more about clarity, speed, and control than about adding extra weight or romance.

For the right room and the right system, though, it’s a very easy speaker to respect. I’d put it in the category of gear that doesn’t just sound good on first listen — it keeps making sense the longer I live with it.
