U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus Turntable Review

The U-Turn Audio Orbit Plus feels like a real step up from the typical starter turntable. Right out of the box, you can tell it’s built with more care than your average all-in-one player. The acrylic platter is the headline feature, and trust me, it’s not just for looks—this thing helps separate the Orbit Plus from cheaper options that often feel disposable after a year of use.

I appreciate how U-Turn keeps the design simple. It’s refreshing to see a turntable that doesn’t come stuffed with gimmicky features that you’ll likely forget about after a few spins. Instead, the Orbit Plus feels like it’s built to last, making it a solid choice for anyone looking to invest a little more into their vinyl journey.

When it comes to sound quality, the Orbit Plus delivers a noticeable upgrade for those moving away from entry-level setups. The commonly used Ortofon OM5E cartridge provides a warm, engaging sound that brings out the nuances in your favorite records. Compared to the tinny output of suitcase players, the difference is night and day.

The acrylic platter also plays a role here, helping to minimize resonance and enhance clarity. I found that records sound more vibrant and full, allowing me to dive deeper into the music. It’s the kind of improvement that makes you want to listen to entire albums rather than just your go-to tracks.

Setting up the Orbit Plus is straightforward, especially for a manual belt-drive turntable. The instructions are clear, and once you get the hang of it, placing the belt and cueing the arm becomes second nature. The optional built-in phono preamp is a nice touch, making it easy to connect to powered speakers without a hassle.

This is where the Orbit Plus may not fit everyone’s lifestyle. If you’re someone who likes to spin records while cooking or cleaning, the manual cueing might feel like a chore. There’s no automatic start or return, which means you have to be a bit more intentional about your listening sessions.

While the Orbit Plus has solid features, it does come with some trade-offs. Depending on the version you choose, the price might feel a bit high compared to alternatives that offer more features on paper. For instance, the Fluance RT82 has a few more bells and whistles that could be tempting for someone focused on value.

The Orbit Plus is a fantastic choice for anyone transitioning from a suitcase player or a basic automatic deck. It’s ideal for those who want to invest in a turntable that won’t feel like a dead end, while still being beginner-friendly. If you’re ready to sit down and enjoy full album sides, this turntable offers a satisfying step up.
