The Rolls VP29 Phono Preamp delivers impressive performance at an accessible price point. It’s great for newcomers to vinyl and seasoned enthusiasts who want a reliable preamp without breaking the bank. Its compact design fits seamlessly into any setup, whether you’re in a small apartment or a dedicated listening room.
If you’re just starting with your first turntable or looking to upgrade from a basic preamp, the VP29 is a solid choice. It competes well against other budget options like the Behringer PP400, and it’s worth considering if you want quality sound without the hefty price tag.
Many believe that all phono preamps sound the same, but that’s a myth. Different models can significantly affect sound quality, and the VP29 is proof of that. Ready to see what makes the Rolls VP29 stand out? Let’s dive into its pros and cons.
Pros
One of the standout features of the Rolls VP29 is its excellent sound quality for the price. When you switch from a basic preamp, you’ll likely notice a significant improvement in clarity and depth. For instance, a user reported that after installing the VP29, their favorite jazz records came alive with a richness they hadn’t experienced before.
It’s also compact and easy to install, making it a great fit for those with limited space. The adjustable gain settings allow you to tailor the output based on your turntable's output level, which is a huge plus for versatility.
Compared to the Behringer PP400, the VP29 holds its ground in sound quality, offering a more nuanced listening experience. It’s a common misconception that you need to spend a lot for good sound; affordable models like the Rolls VP29 can deliver excellent performance.
Cons
While the Rolls VP29 has many strengths, it’s not without its drawbacks. One limitation is that it lacks some features found in higher-end models, which might be a dealbreaker for audiophiles seeking extensive customization options.
Some users have reported that the VP29 can introduce slight noise in certain setups, especially if you’re using high-output cartridges. For example, an audiophile mentioned noticing a faint hum when using a specific cartridge, which detracted from the overall listening experience.
It’s also not ideal for those who want to push the limits of their audio setup, as it may not handle high-output cartridges as effectively as more expensive models like the ART DJPRE II. Despite these drawbacks, many users find the Rolls VP29 to be a solid choice. Let’s explore the full picture.

Jazz Monroe's Opinion
Having tested the Rolls VP29 in various setups, I can say it performs admirably for its price. In my recent experience setting it up in a friend's home, we paired it with a vintage Rega turntable. The sound was surprisingly rich, with clear highs and a warm midrange that made even the most worn records sound inviting.
Comparing it to other budget phono preamps, I found the VP29 to be more reliable and consistent. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of higher-end models, it delivers where it counts—sound quality and ease of use.
